Fit4Youth Food Factory

As part of their Fit4YOUth sessions, designed to inspire a fit and healthy lifestyle, West Berkshire primary school children have been taking part in a “Food Factory” workshop looking at where their food comes from.

When we go to the supermarket, we can see from the labels that our fruits and vegetables come from many different countries around the world. The young people looked to see where the foods they had at home had come from and then used this information to work out how far the food had travelled. They looked at the environmental impact of food miles and discussed the possibility of eating local, seasonal fruit and vegetables instead.

The participants were amazed to discover that their blueberries had been grown in Chile and travelled a staggering 7,254 miles and that their Spanish apples had travelled around 787 miles!
